GeoEngineering

"The march of science and technology does not imply growing intellectual complexity in the lives of most people. It often means the opposite."
~ Thomas Sowell
"It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong."
~ Thomas Sowell

How does dispersing chemicals into the atmosphere help with climate change? Are these chemicals safe for the environment? Are there unintended consequences that could occur?

'The Coastal Atmospheric Aerosol Research and Engagement (CAARE) project is using specially built sprayers to shoot trillions of sea salt particles into the sky in an effort to increase the density - and reflective capacity - of marine clouds. The experiment is taking place, when conditions permit, atop the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum in Alameda, California, and will run through the end of May.

Solar radiation modification is controversial because widespread use of technologies like marine cloud brightening could alter weather patterns in unclear ways and potentially limit the productivity of fisheries and farms.

"History has shown us that when we insert ourselves into modification of nature, there are always very serious unintended consequences," said Goldsmith, who studies the implications of climate change for plant structure and function. "And therefore, it would be prudent to listen to what history has shown and look for consequences".'

States and utility companies are investing in "cloud seeding" - a way to artificially increase precipitation in the drought-ridden American West and worldwide. By seeding storm clouds with a substance called silver iodide, it's possible to increase the efficiency of storms by 5-15%. It's no cure for drought, but it can be a valuable water management tool, which is why cloud seeding operations are ramping up across the country as winter gets underway.

We visited one of the longest-running cloud seeding operations in the country (Santa Barbara County Water Agency) to get a full demonstration and walk-through of the equipment that aims to increase the rain we get from the clouds passing above our heads.

Owning the Weather in 2025

"Current technologies that will mature over the next 30 years will offer anyone who has the necessary resources the ability to modify weather patterns and their corresponding effects, at least on the local scale. Current demographic, economic, and environmental trends will create global stresses that provide the impetus necessary for many countries or groups to turn this weather-modification ability into a capability."
